The Recharging Myth

As a plasma screen television produces images, it uses electricity to burn xenon and neon gas in order to illuminate phosphors. Because of this, many people believe that the gas will run out over time. The notion of having to “recharge” your plasma screen television is a myth. The amount of gases consumed in normal use is minuscule, and they will last throughout the normal life of the screen.

Burn-in and Plasma Screen Televisions

If you leave a plasma screen television on for too long while it is displaying a single image, the television can suffer from burn-in. Burn-in occurs when an image is permanently etched on to the screen of the television, leaving a pale “ghost” of that image no matter what is displayed on screen. The burn-in was a major disadvantage of plasma screen televisions, one that wasn’t shared by LCD televisions. However, you don’t have to worry about burn-in if you have a new model of plasma TV or even if you have an older one and use it for normal television, DVD, and occasional computer use. Plasma screen televisions that suffer from burn-in are often found in corporate settings, where a single image, or a single channel with a news ticker, can burn into the screen.

Preventing Burn-In of Older Plasma Screen Televisions

Burn in will only occur in older plasma screen televisions that display the same image, or the same part of an image, for an extended period of time. Using the screen to display a single image, like a picture, for a long period of time will inevitably cause burn-in if your plasma TV is older than a couple of years. Using the screen as a computer display for long periods of time will cause the desktop of the computer to be burned in to the screen. Also, constantly viewing news programs that have stationary on screen objects (such as news tickers) will cause these objects to burn in to the screen. Most high-end plasma screen televisions have an option called “white wash” that will eliminate a burned in image. Using the white wash will shorten the life of your screen however so don’t abuse it.

Maintaining Your Plasma Screen Television

One of the beautiful things about plasma screen televisions is that they require little or no maintenance. There are no gases to recharge or bulbs to replace like it is the case with projectors or DLP TVs. All you have to do is insure that the television is placed within a safe environment and used properly. Make sure that it rests in a clean, cool, and dry space. When you install it make sure you leave enough room around it so air can flow and cool the plasma TV. Clean the screen regularly and don’t use chemical solutions for that unless the manufacturer recommends it. Don’t leave the television on when its not in use. If you follow these steps, no maintenance will be required and your TV will last you a very long time.

However, not only can this be a hassle in wheeling the screen in and out the house but also if the weather catches you unawares you could find the TV becoming permanently damaged.

3. Standard TV in an outdoor LCD enclosure

The third option is a far cheaper than buying an outdoor TV system but has all the same practicalities. LCD enclosures can house almost any LCD or plasma device – either an old TV no longer used indoors or a cheap standard device bought solely for the garden. What-is-more, an LCD enclosure is manufactured from solid steel and can be mounted on a wall. As they also have secure locks and shatterproof screens they are protected from attempts at theft too.

Toshiba 22LV506 22-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with Built In DVD Player, White Review

I have a large old Toshiba analog ,cathode ray tube tv that has served me well for many years, so i bought this even tho i think it is over-priced. I do not notice the 720p limited definition and my very old parents certainly don’t.

There are few white case /frame TVs available so this was a big plus in a brightly painted breakfast dining area. And as i said in the title, there is no separate dvd box and cable clutter with a separate remote. The left edge dvd player works great and is so easy to use. I would make the left edge markings larger for those with bifocals. 22″ is a good size for viewing from 10-15 feet away, as that was a concern at first.

I did find ONE BIG PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS NO LOUD VOLUME, just low and medium/conversation level. Also ,as another reviewer has pointed out, there is no favorite channels/return channel button, as on most remotes. Also wish this and all remotes were dark illuminated to you can find the right button without turning a lamp on.

The parents have Comcast , so the nice easy-to-understand white Toshiba remote gets no use and we are forced to use the 53 button, very confusing, overly complicated and cheap-looking black Comcast remote. Do wish Toshiba would keep the dvd controls below the switch circle, for more practical layout.

I would recommend this TV to a friend, but at a big annual sale price, not full retail.

This is a very nice TV. It works great at close range in the bedroom. The only problem is the viewing angle. When watching at a low angle it gets pretty dark.

I love this TV because my husband likes a TV in the bedroom and I don’t. I lost but at least I don’t have to look at a big ugly tv taking up space. This thing is very aesthetically pleasing! Super sleek. Fits on our fireplace mantel and blends in with the pictures. The sound is just fine. We have a large room and we keep it at 8 for night TV and 24 for when my kids and husband are showering and getting ready. It plays our CDs too so that takes care of more cluttering electronics!

The Toshiba 22LV506 is a stylish, satisfying and space-saving solution for anyone who lives in limited space, but there is a major flaw which is big enough to take the rating from 5 stars to 3 stars. There is no back/last channel button! I thought this was standard for any TV with a remote control by now. So you can’t jump from one channel to another. Its a major inconvenience to type the channel you want to go to or use the channel up and down buttons. TVs half this size and half this price have back buttons. Anyway, other than this flaw the Toshiba 22LV506 delivers everything else you need in a nice little package.

Panasonic TC P46G15 – 46″ plasma TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV Review

Purchased this plasma TV in early January. It was a “close-out” model still in box at a local big box retailer. I bought the last one in the store. We recently moved and my huge 65″ projection TV was not going to fit into our new living room, so we needed a flat screen to mount on the wall next to the fireplace. I was undecided between an LCD or plasma, but decided on the latter due to the claim of a better viewing angle. The tv is mounted in a corner, and is watched from the living room, dining room and sometimes the kitchen, so a good viewing angle was crucial. I’ve had this tv for over a month now & we absolutely love it! The picture is so beautiful no matter what the source we’re playing. Standard def is clear and of course, HD is amazing! The sound from the TV isn’t as bad as I thought it would be after reading other reviews. Digital quality sound thru HDMI & the TV’s speakers is crisp and clear. We did end up buying a AV receiver to hook up to the TV but that was more for music purposes. I could have easily used and been happy with the tv’s built-in speakers. The viewing angle is very good, which is why we chose this model in the first place. A couple negatives about this TV to be aware of: 1) there is a glare off of the screen if watching in a sunny room. One entire wall in our living room is a window that is currently not covered by curtains or anything, so the room gets plenty of sunlight during the day. At certain times of the day, the picture on the TV is nearly washed out due to the glare from the screen, but we plan to install a curtain on that wall sometime soon so this should resolve that issue. In addition, our TV watching during the day is not too often, so this minor annoyance is tolerable for us. I had read that due to the glass screen, plasmas do give off more glare than LCDs, so I knew this going in. Not going to ‘ding’ a product for something I already expected. This was a trade-off I was willing to make for the better viewing angle. I have never owned an LCD flat screen so cannot compare the anti-glare claim on those TVs. 2) This TV is difficult to keep clean since dust shows up like crazy on the black casing, but again, this is a minor complaint for me. Only takes a minute or two to swipe it clean. My boyfriend, who did not want a new TV, actually commented on my good decision to buy this one. And all of our friends who were thinking of going the LCD route have changed their minds to going plasma, or this exact same TV. I think that’s the best testament of all! All in all VERY pleased with this model and its performance. Can’t imagine someone experiencing television on this set and not enjoying it!!!

We looked at big-screen HDTV for over a year before picking the Panasonic TC-P50G15. We’ve had it now for about four months and couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve yet to see a unit with a better picture. Married the unit to a Polk Audio SurroundBar SDA and Panasonic DMP-BD60 BlueRay player. Highly recommend the sound bar if you don’t plan to do a major surround-sound system. In fact, suggest you try the Polk system before you spend the money on a big-time surround-sound system. We do not use our system for Internet features or for gaming, so I can’t speak to those aspects of performance. The TV is in a room with lots of natural light. No problem. Very good off-axis picture quality too.

Amazingly sharp image, excellent grayscale, very good color fidelity, except for slightly pumped reds, and the usual compliment of connectivity are the traditional hallmark of Panasonic plasma televisions and this set is no exception. This set will not disapoint anyone except for the really picky who will bemoan the oversaturated reds. Blu Ray is truly astounding and Direct TV is excellent except for the graininess that is one of the traits of the channels that broadcast in 720P, which would be exhibited on any set. The issue with flicker raised by other reviewers disappears once you set the refresh rate at 60hz. At that rate the image is flicker and shudder free. While it might be a little small for a home theater set up it is unbeatable for a more intimate setting like a living room. It is a worthwhile investment and my recent experiences with Panasonic quality have been very positive. Highly recommended!

The persistent question remains. Which is better? An LCD TV or a plasma TV? Both are the latest technology available for your entertainment at home.
